Great news for the autism community!

The Office of Personnel Management (OPM), which manages the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program (FEHB), has responded to member demand and expanded Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) coverage for people with FEHB plans. The FEHB program is the nation’s largest employer-sponsored health benefits program, covering about 8.2 million federal employees, retirees and their families. Initially, in 2012, OPM began encouraging plans to cover this treatment under their 2013 policies. Because of this, over time, some carriers did begin treatment coverage. Others did not but will now. Beginning in 2017, OPM will expect all of its insurers to offer ABA benefits to children on the autism spectrum.

This move to include ABA in policies nationwide comes as the vast majority of states (44) already mandate such coverage and recognizes the growing interest in ABA among many consumers. This move by FEHB supports the research linking behavioral interventions with positive outcomes and it reflects a shared commitment that people with autism should have access to medically necessary care. If you are unsure if the new mandate affects you or your coverage please contact your insurance provider.

This is a big step in the right direction and we hope it will pave the way for further support of the autistic community!
